SYRACUSE CHAPTERof theNYSBUARulesRule explanations and their relations to mechanics are available as a pdf download. For: Balks and rundowns... click here! Today's question on the DH rule: Jones is the DH for Smith. Jones gets a hit and the coach wants to use Smith as a pinch runner. After that the coach wants to re-enter Jones as the DH and put Smith back in field on defense. Is this allowed? Today's answer: Smith may legally run for Jones; the DH position is now eliminated. Smith is now in the batting order, but Jones is eligible to reenter in that place in the batting order. Jones cannot reenter as the DH (DH was eliminated), but he can reenter for Smith (or anyone who might have replaced Smith in that spot) in the batting order (and on defense). So ... Jones could pinch hit for Smith later on and then Smith could go back into the field. Once that happens, Jones is out of the game. Smith can still reenter in that spot in the batting order because he has only been out of the game once, when Jones reentered for him. REMEMBER: The original person for whom the DH bats is already in the game, so if he replaces the DH, he is not entering the game that he is already in, so that first entry into the batting lineup is NOT his reentry. Batting Out of Order All starting players, including the player who is listed as the starting DH may reenter under the substitution rule. If the DH enters the game to play a position, the ROLE of DH is lost, but the player retains the right to reenter as long as it is in the same spot in the batting order and no substitution rules are violated. This applies to all defensive positions, including pitcher (assuming no pitcher substitution rules have been violated). Reentry restrictions apply only to position in the batting order, not defensive position (innings are shown, but not necessarily important to the situation) 2nd inning: Adams moves to play CF in place of Brown. DH role is lost. (Brown may reenter) 3rd inning: Brown enters the batting order to bat for Adams. DH role is lost. (Adams may reenter) |
