Here are some actual happenings from around the state. Enjoy. #1 There are two games going on simultaneously at adjoining fields. As the left fielder is camped under a fly ball waiting to make the catch, a foul ball from the other field enters this field and the left fielder ducks away from catching the fly ball, and the ball drops. Now what? #2 Jones, the pitcher, is batting second in the order, while Griff, the DH is batting in the 8 spot for the catcher, Miller. In the sixth inning, the coach wants to enter Griff as the new pitcher and continue to catch Miller. Possible? #3 In the top of the seventh inning, with the score: V-3, H-8, the visiting team wants the umpires to call the game because of darkness and rule it a suspended game. Is this possible? #4 After 4 complete innings, the score is V-0, H-7. In the top of the fifth inning, the visitors score 7 runs. In the bottom of the fifth, the Home team scores two runs, and then with one out, the game is called because of darkness. Regulation game, home wins; or non-regulation, either played completely over or suspended from that point? #5 Visiting team shows with only nine players. During warm-up, one of their players hurts his arm. The coach starts this player in right field, batting ninth. When his turn at bat arrives, the coach removes him, takes the out, and then reenters the player in the bottom of the inning, defensively. He does this in the 2nd, 4th, 5th and 6th innings. Legal? #6 With a runner on second base, the pitcher is pitching from the stretch position. As the pitcher begins his motion to the plate, the batter backs out of the batter's box. The pitcher stops his delivery and the umpire calls, "Balk." Is this the correct call? ANSWERS: #1 There is no answer. Unless this is a new facility, you would hope that there would be a ground rule that covers this possibility. If there isn't, then I would probably rule" play on, although I would recognize the fact that there could be other possibilities. 10-2-3g #2 There is no legal way of having the DH in the game and the person who he was hitting for in the game, playing defense, at the same time. #3 If the UMPIRES decide that it is too dark, then the game is stopped and awarded to the home team. #4 Home team wins, the true meaning of home team advantage. #5 Legal the first time, illegal after that. A starting player may be removed once from the lineup and then reenter. Not four times. #6 Not the correct call. The offense cannot cause a balk. Dead ball, possibly a warning to the batter if you read intent, start over. Hope all your seasons went well, see you in the Fall. Ron |
